Morphometric Evaluation of Phenotypic Groups of Creole Cattle of Southern Ecuador

The breeding of creole cattle from the southern region of Ecuador, also known as Criollo Lojano, is a source of economic support and work for the communities located in the remote areas of the Andes mountains in this region. These cattle are grouped into four biotypes based on their phenotypic characteristics: Negro Lojano, Encerado, Colorado, and Cajamarca or Pintado.

Evaluation invitro of two protocols of vitrification from alpaca (Vicugna pacos) embryos

The reproductive efficiency of South American camelids as the alpaca is low, with a few number of animals having a good genetic characteristic. The transfer of cryopreserved embryos has great potential to disseminate valuable genetic, but the suitable protocol for such cryopreservation still needs to be developed. In this study, two protocols of vitrification of alpaca embryos were tested.

Effect of concentration of methionine in maturation and culture medium on cleavage rate of oocytes from alpaca (Lama pacos)

Maturation time of oocytes from alpacas is around 38 to 40 h (Huanca et al. 2009) that would induce an increase in reactive oxygen species during in vitro maturation and IVF and cause cytotoxic damage to gametes. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal concentration of methionine during in vitro maturation on cleavage rate of alpacas oocytes following IVF.

Trends, seasonality and the association between outpatient antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance among urinary bacteria in the Netherlands.

Objectives: To determine trends, seasonality and the association between community antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in urinary tract infections.

MILK COMPOSITION OF THE CREOLE GOAT IN AN EXTENSIVE HUSBANDRY ENVIRONMENT IN A SEASONALLY DRY FOREST OF SOUTHERN ECUADOR

Background. The Creole goat (Chusca Lojana) is found in the tropical zone of the seasonally dry forest (SDF) in Loja province (southern Ecuador, South America), where 73 % of the nationwide goat population is located. Objective. To study the productive characteristics and the milk quality of this population because this genetic resource represents a valuable socio-economic element for the habitants of this region. Methodology.

Exploring soil restoration potential of dung beetles and their associated bacteria in southern Ecuador.

Southern Ecuador is a highly diverse area with a high rate of endemism, that despite latest efforts, it is still understudied (Cuesta et al. 2013). It especially lacks research on soil microorganisms and invertebrates (Salazar & Donoso 2014). Soil diversity studies are needed to generate restoration strategies of fragile ecosystems to guarantee their long-term functionality.
